Yesterday I found some time to start installing the landing pads for my roof rack. Since the STi sedan didn’t have a roof rack as a factory option (or if it did, it is rarely chosen) I had to drill and tap my own holes and hack up the rain gutter a little bit. There are factory brackets with holes but they are not threaded. So I first tried driving to home Depot only to discover that my Miata has some issue with a bogging/erratic idle so I turned around and came home (different problem for another day). Then I just walked over instead so that I wouldn’t have to reassemble the Subaru. At home Depot I picked up a 10-32 tap/drill kit and four 10-32 stainless fasteners. This rung out to about $36. When I got home, I took off the drivers side rain rail and tapped the existing holes and drilled through holes in the rain rail. It was a pain in the ass to line up the bolts through the landing pad and then through the rail and into the bracket. And these needed to be just long enough bolts so it was a struggle to get it right. But eventually I got both Landing pads on snuggly! Today I will be putting the passenger side ones in which require drilling new holes because the factory ones are way off from straight for who knows why. Maybe factory racks are weirdly offset? Anyways, I’m liking how it looks so far as its not too obnoxious with the landing pad tumors on the roof. The rest of the install after today should be easy, just have to order the towers and bars and locks which just bolt right into the Yakima parts easily. I plan to remove the towers/bars when not in use but leave the landing pads installed all the time.
Off to the garage for part two of the install! Hoping to also find time to fix my AC since the o rings finally arrived yesterday. I only had one o ring which was clearly spewing the uv crap when I tested it but I'm just going to replace all of them while the system is empty of refrigerant. Hopefully the hoses are all accessible without major deconstruction of the engine bay.

I wonder how just the pads will affect the flow of the top and rear spoilers.
EDIT: since you are missing the rear wing...im guessing its not going to matter much.

Does that garage have an electrical outlet handy for the vacuum pump for the A/C project?

I'm not planning on tracking this car ever so it shouldn't matter much lol. But yeah I'd imagine the landing pads wouldn't matter nearly as much as the full rack for Aero. But it certainly could still have some weird turbulent effects if both spoilers were there.

Unfortunately no, so I need to do the refill portion somewhere that has power or find one that will work in the car interior outlet. Bigger problem though is that the o ring that I actually needed was not the one shipped to me, so I have the wrong part. It's the right part number according to the diagram but it doesn't fit at all. So I'll have to sort that out first. I might just pay a shop for the refill if I get lazy but I wanted to do the part replacement myself at least. I still have to source manifold gauges (hopefully rent from AZ) and the vaccum

My sales guy said subie didn’t offer the factory rack set up on the WRX until 2018 - kinda surprised me...

Any parts house, or even harbor freight, should have drawers or kits of o-rings that’ll probably have what you need. An o-ring is an o-ring, when it comes to sizing. In the alternative, any industrial seal and bearing supply shop or hydraulic shop will be able to match up the o-ring and have ought to have one in fluorocarbon sitting on the shelf. They probably won’t even charge you for it unless you’re buying in significant quantity.
I can’t recommend the manifold gauge set at HF, but they’ve got some vacuum pumps that will work fine for occasional use. I doubt there is a vacuum pump out there that you’ll be able to drive off a 12v outlet. For a gauge set, amazon has this , and it is vastly better quality than the HF set.

2008 is the first factory one. The rack that I’m using is afternarket for a 2008 but the oem solution basically fits the same way . I wouldn’t have to drill any holes if that was the case. The prescribed method for attaching mine is the bullshit window clamp way b ut I hate that. But I’d also have massive Ringland issues and greater chances of Headgasket issues. I’ve got the sweetspot for mechanical reliability generally.
